A Kentucky state lawmaker is looking into whether a drug manufacturer may sell sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, to a target that is under investigation by the Justice Department of the U. S. Central District.
The state attorney’s office announced Thursday that they are seeking federal permission to market the drug to the public, though the Food and Drug Administration has not made its decision yet.
“We do not believe that this particular product is inherently dangerous,” said Matt Mckina, acting attorney for the Kentucky Pharmaceutical Association.
The FDA is also investigating the issue, which is currently being studied by other states in the US. The agency will also investigate whether manufacturers of other drugs may have illegally sold them as Viagra.
In a letter to the state attorney’s office, the FDA said it had received “significant concerns” that drug manufacturers could sell drugs to the public without approval.
The letter goes on to say the products are “appropriate and safe for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.”
However, the agency is not certain how many people will be affected by the drug use. The agency will continue to monitor the situation, however.
The states that the product’s manufacturer is currently in talks with a company called Apotex Inc., and the company has said it will make the decision to market the drug to the public.
The states are also investigating whether the company has engaged in conduct that is possibly harmful to public health.
In an email to The Associated Press, Apotex officials wrote, “As a pharmacy and medical device company, we believe that we have the highest regulatory standards for pharmacy safety. This includes the safety of products that we believe contain sildenafil, and those products that are marketed as having similar or similar-looking ingredients.”
The company has not yet responded to requests for comment.
